Introduction

Twickenham Preparatory School was founded in 1969 and has grown rapidly since, relocating to Hampton in 1992; extending the school in 1998 and constructing the Music and Art Block in 2012.

High Standards

The Music and Art Block provides an elegant learning environment; the entire building is acoustically treated; natural light and fresh air pour in through roof lights and sun tubes in the wave shaped green roof; the temperature and humidity are measured and controlled to maximize student and teacher comfort.

Services

The Music and Art Block required an extension of some services from the main school, such as fire and security alarms, water services and data infrastructure. However, the Music and Art Block independently generates its own heat via an air source heat pump and underfloor heating system and its own electricity from solar photovoltaic panels. Furthermore, the heat pump cools the rooms during hot weather.

Lighting

The Music and Art Block has dimmable acoustically treated light fittings in the class rooms. External lighting is photocell and time switch controlled.

BREEAM

The Music and Art Block was designed to BREEAM Excellent standard. Water and energy consumption are displayed in a public area and have been minimized throughout; thermal comfort and indoor air quality are accurately controlled, natural sources of energy have been maximized; the building is safe, secure and responsive to a wide variety of conditions.
